Planting Kale Seeds

Growing your own food can be a great way to save money and eat healthier. One vegetable that is gaining popularity in gardens all over is kale. This leafy green is packed with vitamins and minerals and is easy to grow from seed. Here are some tips on how to grow kale from seed in your own backyard.

First, choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil. Kale prefers soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. You can test your soil with a soil testing kit available at most garden centers. If your soil is too alkaline, you can add sulfur to lower the pH.

Next, prepare your soil by tilling it to a depth of about 6 inches. Remove any rocks or debris, and add compost or aged manure to improve soil fertility. Work the compost into the soil to a depth of about 3 inches.

Now it’s time to plant your kale seeds. You can start seeds indoors about 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost or sow them directly in the garden after the last frost. Plant seeds about half an inch deep, and about 18 inches apart to allow for adequate growth. Once your seedlings reach about 3 inches tall, thin them to about 12 inches apart.

Water your kale regularly, especially during hot or dry weather. Kale prefers consistent moisture, so be sure to water deeply rather than frequently. Adding a layer of mulch around your plants will help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

As your kale plants grow, you can fertilize them with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package, as over-fertilizing can cause damage to your plants.

Harvest your kale when leaves reach about 4 inches in length. You can either remove individual leaves or cut the entire plant at the base. Kale is most flavorful when harvested young, so be sure to keep an eye on your plants and harvest frequently.

Growing kale from seed is not only easy, but also rewarding. With a little bit of work, you can have a steady supply of this nutritious leafy green throughout the growing season. So get out there and start planting your own kale garden today!
