White Fleshed Pitahaya

Dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya, is a tropical fruit with a unique appearance and taste that has gained popularity in recent years. Its name comes from the striking scales that cover its bright red or yellow skin, giving it the appearance of a dragon’s scales. While most people are familiar with the red-fleshed variety, there is also a white-fleshed pitahaya that is equally delicious and refreshing.

Growing white-fleshed pitahaya is not difficult, but it does require some knowledge of its growing habits and needs. This cactus is native to Central and South America and requires a warm, humid climate to thrive. While it can be grown in many parts of the world, it does best in regions with temperatures between 70-85°F and high humidity levels.

To grow white-fleshed pitahaya, you will need to start with a healthy cactus cutting. Look for a cutting that is at least 12 inches long and has a few nodes, or bumps, along its stem. These nodes will eventually produce roots and new growth. Once you have your cutting, allow it to dry out for a few days before planting.

When planting, choose a location that receives full sun or partial shade. White-fleshed pitahaya prefers well-draining soil, so be sure to add sand or perlite to your soil mixture if it tends to hold water. Plant your cutting vertically in the soil, burying it at least 4 inches deep. Water your cutting sparingly at first, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. Once your cutting has established roots and new growth, you can start watering it more frequently.

As your white-fleshed pitahaya grows, it will eventually produce beautiful, fragrant flowers. These flowers only bloom at night and are pollinated by bats and moths. Once the flowers have been pollinated, they will produce edible fruit. Harvest your fruit when it is fully ripe, as it will not continue to ripen once picked.

Whether you are growing white-fleshed or red-fleshed pitahaya, this exotic fruit is a delicious addition to any garden. Its mildly sweet taste and unique texture make it a great addition to smoothies, salads, and desserts. So why not give it a try and grow your own pitahaya? You might just discover your new favorite fruit!

As always, when trying a new plant species at home, make sure to do your research and get a solid understanding of how to care for the plant appropriately. With patience and careful attention, you too can grow juicy, delicious fruit.
