Have y’all ever heard of Okra? That’s “Okra” with an “O” not “Oktober” with an “O”. I’ll give you a hint, it’s not a character from Lord of the Rings.

Okra is a vegetable that is grown as an annual plant. You plant the seeds in the springtime, and within a few months, you’ll have a whole bunch of these green finger-looking vegetables. It’s like a bounty of fingers but instead of fingernails, it’s got these little bumps on the outside. They look funny, but don’t let that fool ya, okra is packed with vitamins and minerals that’ll make your body sing!

Now, don’t get it twisted, okra might look funny on the outside, but once you slice it open, it’s soft and gooey on the inside, almost like a hug from your favorite aunt. It’s got seeds in the center but don’t fret, they’re edible too! So you might be thinking “what do I even do with okra once I’ve got it?” Well, I’m glad you asked.

First, you can fry it up! Dredge those little fingers in some flour and spices, and toss ’em in a pan with some hot oil. It’s like little crunchy nuggets of goodness. Second, you can pickle it! Yes, pickle it, just like you would a cucumber. It’s a Southern delicacy, and it’s practically a rite of passage to learn how to pickle okra.

Now, I know some of y’all might be thinking “okra ain’t for me”, but I challenge you to give it a try! You never know what you might like until you try it. Plus, it’s fun to say “okra”. Go ahead, try it “O-K-R-A”. Doesn’t that just roll off the tongue?
