Painting A Wood Table

Painting Wood Furniture: Tips and Tricks

Transforming a wooden piece of furniture can add a new lease of life to any room. Whether you’re wanting to create a completely new look or just refresh an old piece in your home, painting wood furniture is an easy way to achieve a stylish finish. It is also a cost-effective way to upcycle something that you already have. However, one of the biggest challenges when painting wood furniture is the preparation required. Sanding wood furniture is typically seen as necessary, but we have found another way to paint over varnished wood without all the sanding required.

With a few simple tips and tricks, you can successfully paint wood furniture without having to sand it first, making the process quick and easy. Here’s how:

Create a Clean Surface
Before starting any painting project, it’s important to begin with a clean surface. Use a soft cloth and some soap and water to remove any dirt or grease from the wood. Wipe the wood down with a clean, dry cloth to make sure it’s entirely dry before you begin to paint. Check the wood for any existing chips, cracks or dents and fill them in with wood putty. Once the wood putty has dried, sand gently with a fine grit sandpaper until it’s smooth.

Prime the Wood
Next, apply a coat of primer to the wood. A wood primer will ensure that your topcoat adheres better to the wood and it will also cover any wood stains that could bleed through your paint. Be sure to use a good quality primer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times.

Paint the Wood
Finally, with an even brush stroke, apply your chosen paint. Two coats of paint will be sufficient to achieve an opaque finish. Before applying the second coat, allow the first coat of paint to dry completely. Once you have painted the piece, leave it to dry completely before using it. Ideally, you should leave the painted piece of furniture for a few days before use, to allow the paint to fully cure.

Whilst some may be worried about the longevity of the paint adhering to the surface of the wood without sanding it first, it has been our experience that this technique of painting works well.

With these simple steps in mind, transforming an old or tired piece of furniture into a new, stylish addition to your home has never been easier. And, with a variety of colours and styles available in paint, the possibilities are endless!
