How To Repaint Wood Furniture

If you have a wooden chair that’s looking a little worse for wear, don’t toss it out just yet! With a little bit of elbow grease and some know-how, you can strip and repaint your wooden chair to give it a new lease on life. Here’s how to do it!

Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials. You’ll need a paint stripper, a scraper, sandpaper, a drop cloth or newspaper, a paintbrush or spray paint, and protective gear like gloves and goggles.

1. Prep your workspace. Lay down a drop cloth or newspapers to protect your work surface. Consider doing this project outside, or in a well-ventilated area, since paint stripper can be quite potent.

2. Apply paint stripper. Apply the paint stripper according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a paintbrush or a rag to apply it to the surface of the chair, making sure to cover every surface that you want to strip. Be sure to wear gloves and goggles to protect yourself from any splashes or fumes.

3. Wait for the stripper to do its job. The paint stripper will need some time to work its magic. Check the instructions for a recommended wait time, but you can usually expect to wait about 10-15 minutes before moving on to the next step.

4. Scrape off the old finish. Once the paint stripper has had a chance to work, use a scraper to remove the old finish. Be gentle but firm, being careful not to gouge the wood. Work in sections, and don’t apply too much pressure with the scraper.

5. Sand the surface. Once you’ve removed as much of the old finish as possible, use sandpaper to smooth out the surface of the wood. Start with a coarse grit and work your way up to a finer grit, until the surface is smooth to the touch.

6. Clean the surface. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the surface of the chair, removing any remaining bits of old finish or dust from sanding.

7. Apply new finish. Once the surface is completely dry, you can apply a new coat of finish to the chair. You can use a paintbrush or spray paint for this step, depending on your preference. Be sure to apply several thin coats, allowing each coat to completely dry before adding another.

8. Finish up. Once the final coat of finish is dry, you can reattach any screws or hardware that you removed earlier. Your newly stripped and repainted wooden chair is now ready to use!

With a little bit of patience and attention to detail, anyone can successfully strip and repaint a wooden chair. This is a great DIY project that can save you money and breathe new life into an old piece of furniture. So why not give it a try?
