Growing Sweet Potatoes In Florida

Sweet potatoes are a staple in many households across the country, and Florida is no exception. Florida, with its tropical climate, is perfect for growing sweet potatoes, and it’s no surprise that many people in the state have been growing their own sweet potatoes for years. In this post, I’m going to tell you all about growing sweet potatoes in my Florida food garden.

First and foremost, sweet potatoes need a lot of sun. In fact, they thrive in full sun, so if you’re planning on growing sweet potatoes, make sure they get at least six hours of sunlight each day. Another important factor for growing sweet potatoes is the soil. Sweet potatoes prefer well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is sandy, add some compost or peat moss to make it more suitable for growing sweet potatoes.

Now, let’s talk about planting. You can plant sweet potatoes either by slips or by using a whole potato. Slips are small plants that grow from a sweet potato, while planting a whole potato involves burying the potato in the soil and waiting for it to sprout. I prefer planting by slips as it ensures a high yield. You can purchase slips online or from a gardening center. Once you have slips, plant them in warm soil that is at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The slips should be planted 12 to 18 inches apart, with rows spaced 3 to 4 feet apart.

Sweet potatoes need a lot of water, especially during the first few weeks of growth. Make sure to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Too much water can lead to fungal diseases or root rot. On the other hand, keeping the soil too dry can stunt the growth of your sweet potatoes.

When it comes to harvesting sweet potatoes, you should wait until the leaves have turned yellow or brown. This is a sign that the sweet potatoes are ready to be harvested. Use a spade or fork to carefully dig up the sweet potatoes. Be gentle, as sweet potatoes can be easily damaged during the harvesting process.

Sweet potatoes are not only delicious but also rich in nutrients such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C. They are a great addition to any meal and can be baked, boiled, or roasted. My favorite way to prepare sweet potatoes is to roast them with some herbs and spices. Yum!

In conclusion, growing sweet potatoes in Florida is a great way to add some homegrown goodness to your diet. With the right soil, water, and sunlight, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of these delicious and nutritious root vegetables. So why not try growing your own sweet potatoes? Your taste buds (and your body) will thank you!
