How Do I Grow Potatoes

Potatoes are a staple in so many of our meals, from mashed to baked to fried. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to grow your own potatoes right at home? Good news – it’s totally possible! With a few weird and wonderful methods, you can grow sacks full of potatoes to enjoy all year long.

First up, we have the classic method of planting potatoes in the ground. You can do this in a traditional garden bed or even in a raised garden box to avoid digging in the ground. Simply cut your seed potatoes into pieces, each with a couple of “eyes” (little sprouts), and plant them in the soil about 4 inches deep. As the plants grow, mound soil up around them to encourage more potatoes to form. Harvest when the plants start to die back – just dig carefully to avoid damaging the potatoes.

If you’re short on space, try growing potatoes in a bag! Get a large garbage bag, poke a few drainage holes in the bottom, and fill it about a third full of soil. Add your potato pieces and cover with more soil, leaving a few inches at the top of the bag. As the plants grow, add more soil until the bag is full. When it’s time to harvest, simply dump the bag out and sift through the soil to find your potatoes.

Another fun way to grow potatoes is in a container tower. Using a similar method as the bag, stack containers (like old tires or buckets) on top of each other and fill with soil and potatoes. Make sure to add drainage holes and plenty of soil to each container in the stack. As the plants grow, add more containers and soil until you have a tower of spuds.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even try growing potatoes in hay or straw! Spread a thick layer (at least 6 inches) of hay or straw on the ground, then place your potato pieces on top. Cover with another thick layer of hay or straw, and water well. As the plants grow, add more layers of hay/straw and water as needed. Come harvest time, simply lift up the hay/straw and dig through to find your potatoes.

No matter which method you choose, growing potatoes at home is a fun and rewarding experience. Plus, you’ll have a fresh supply of spuds for all your favorite meals. Give it a try and see just how easy and weirdly wonderful growing your own potatoes can be!
