Who doesn’t love garlic? Whether you’re a vampire avoiding it like the plague or a garlic enthusiast like myself, there’s no denying the aromatic and flavorful powers of this bulbous plant.
Planting Garlic: The Basics
If you’re a garlic-growing newbie, don’t fret – it’s as easy as pie! First things first, select the type of garlic you want to grow. Soft-neck varieties, like artichoke, are perfect for those living in warmer climates, while hard-neck varieties, such as rocambole, thrive in colder regions.
Plant garlic in the fall – roughly two to four weeks before the first frost. Your garlic will take around eight months to mature, so have patience, young grasshopper. Begin by breaking apart the garlic bulb and selecting the biggest and healthiest cloves.
Next, plant each clove around two inches deep and six inches apart, with the pointy end facing upward. Cover the cloves with garden soil and then with a layer of mulch to retain moisture. Within a few weeks, you’ll start to see green shoots poking through the dirt. Ta-da!
Growing Garlic: The Fun Part
Garlic is a pretty low-maintenance crop. As long as you water it regularly and mulch it well, you shouldn’t experience any issues. However, the month of May is a critical time for garlic growth. During this time, be sure to cut off the scapes (the curly-cues on the end of the stalks) to encourage bigger bulbs.
In July or August, your garlic plants will start to wither and die. This is your cue to harvest your garlic! Use a garden fork to loosen the soil around the bulbs, then gently pull out the plant. Allow your freshly harvested garlic to dry in a warm and dry spot for a few weeks.
Now you’re ready to start using your homegrown garlic! Roast it, sauté it, pickle it – the options are endless. Just remember to brush your teeth afterwards, unless you want to ward off any potential suitors. Happy planting!
