The Royal Vault In St George's Chapel

If you ever find yourself in Windsor, England, be sure to stop by St. George’s Chapel at the Windsor Castle. This stunning chapel is steeped in history and is home to the Royal Vault.

The Royal Vault is an underground chamber that houses the remains of many members of the British royal family. The vault was originally built for King George III, who wanted to be buried in a more private location than the traditional royal burial site of Westminster Abbey.

The vault was later expanded to accommodate more members of the royal family, including King Edward VII, King George V, and their families. Today, the Royal Vault is the final resting place for many members of the royal family, including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

The vault is located beneath the Quire, the area of the chapel near the altar where the choir sings during services. It is accessed by a staircase that leads down from the chapel’s North Quire Aisle.

Inside the vault, visitors can see the tombs of many members of the royal family, including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The tombs are beautifully adorned with marble and bronze sculptures, and visitors can read inscriptions detailing the lives and accomplishments of the departed.

One tomb that is particularly impressive is that of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the parents of Queen Elizabeth II. The tomb is made of black marble and is adorned with a stunning bronze sculpture of the two monarchs.

Visitors can also see the tombs of some of the royal family’s more recent members, including Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

The Royal Vault is a fascinating peek into the history of the British royal family. It is a must-see for anyone interested in British history or the monarchy. So the next time you find yourself in Windsor, make sure to stop by St. George’s Chapel and pay your respects to the members of the royal family who are buried there.
